The Vitamix blender is the best blender I have ever used. It consistently blends my smoothies and dressings to my desired consistency, and doesn't take long to do it.
Since the container is one big piece, it's really easy to clean and there's no parts to unscrew and screw back on. The 64-oz container is a BPA-free hard plastic called Tritan, which is nice and sturdy, and doesn't leave any plastic-y taste.
One of the things I love about the Vitamix is how simple it is to use. There are only two switches and one knob. No levers, whistles, or big red buttons marked "DO NOT PRESS." The Vitamix blender has two basic operating mode: Variable and High.
Variable: This mode uses the middle knob to change the speed from 1 (very slow) to 10 (stronger than most blenders). Hopefully future models will go to 11.
High: This bypasses the speed knob and just blends the heck out of whatever you've got in there!
The lid makes a really great seal, which is a pleasant change from the mediocre blenders I used to use. Even if I run the blender on "High" when full of water, nothing leaks out.
The tamper is another really awesome feature, which is something that the Blendtec, the main competing high-end blender, lacks. The tamper saves a ton of time with thicker recipes, because you can easily push unblended pieces into the blade area.
As a supremely useful piece of idiot-proofing, the tamper has a guard around the handle so that you can't possibly hit the blades with it. Thank goodness!
When you buy the Vitamix 5200, you'll also receive a recipe DVD, a cookbook, and a "Getting Started" guide. A $91 value, all yours for free! Oh boy!
Of course, as a raw foodist you will find these utterly useless and throw them away. Oh well. The blender is well worth the price without the extras.
And the best part of all is, if you buy your own Vitamix through Raw Food Freedom, you'll receive free shipping!
Despite running a 2-HP motor, I find the noise level of the Vitamix to be totally tolerable, even running on High. I can easily continue a conversation or hear whatever music I'm listening to. I wouldn't run it at 2AM if you have sleeping roommates or family members, but in any less ridiculous context, it shouldn't be an issue.
Is Vitamix worth the price?
Most definitely!
I grew up on cheap blenders, so at first the price tag for a Vitamix seemed pretty steep for something as simple as a blender. However, not only does it outperform cheaper blenders, but Vitamix comes with a 30-day no-risk trial, so you can return it if you don't like. Not to mention the full 7 year warranty, which is pretty impressive.
With the number of cheap blenders you would go through in 7 years, you'll probably end up saving money by buying quality (Vitamix) rather than quantity (cheap blenders). And you'll save yourself a lot of frustration and chunky smoothies!
How can I make my Vitamix blender more awesome?
Easy!
How fast can I make a smoothie?

This is one of the most beautiful little recipe books I've ever seen! The layout and the colours are so easy to 'digest,' and as a matter of a fact, so are the recipes! It's simple, yet creative and unique.
Even after 5 years as a high carb raw vegan, I came across some new recipes that I'm going to try. I love how little ingredients and equipment is used and those stunning pictures just really bring the recipes to life.
You actually managed to make this not just a recipe book but a must-have high carb raw vegan manual. Great work Josh :)

I've been going through your book & I love it. You have inspired me to eat simpler meals & to stop combining fruit with fat.
Your recipes are simple, but there are some great combinations & ideas I hadn't even thought of. I love the colorfulness of your book too.
Thank you for putting together some great tips & lots of useful info into one little book!
